My name is Efrain Huaman Carrion and I am a volunteer firefighter in Peru. I’m part of the International American Rescue Team. Today’s date is September 26, 2002. Last year, I volunteered at the World Trade Center after the attacks on the Twin Towers.
My boss, Douglas Copp, called me on the telephone. I work in printing in Peru and am a volunteer firefighter but, in my country, you can’t live on this because we do it for free. My boss called me and I wanted to come the first day but there were no flights. I called various agencies and after 6 days, I was able to get a flight coming here from Peru. You had to come by helicopter or other ways because there were no commercial flights.
I’ve worked in different countries in the area of rescue. Under the direction of Douglas Copp, we’ve worked in places such as India, Turkey, El Salvador, Mexico, California and in El Salvador, Peru, and Colombia after earthquakes. My boss has experience with over 987 rescue actions. I haven’t participated in as many, but I have experience as a firefighter.
I volunteered for more than a month and the experience was unimaginable. More than a year later, I still feel so sad inside and often have nightmares. It’s so sad to think that human beings are capable of such destruction. In this world there are people who build and those who destroy but unfortunately this is how life is.
When the attacks happened, I didn’t think twice about coming to help but I couldn’t get a flight. I was finally able to buy a ticket to come help my brother firefighters and police.
In the work that I do, I don’t see religion, skin color or social status. I am moved by my Christian spirit to help those around me. Spiritually and in my heart, I like to help.
What happened to my brothers and sisters here in New York is so unfortunate and I wanted to do whatever I could to help with all my heart. I would compare what I saw and lived through last year to the Biblical Apocalypse. It’s too sad to describe in words. I can only compare it to the Apocalypse. I pray that something like this will never happen again here or in any other country.
One human being is worth more than all of the gold in the world, more than millions of worlds together. A human being is a marvelous thing, God’s creation and I hope nothing like this ever happens again. We have to respect, love and help others and come together.
We should try to spend time with our parents and brothers and sisters. Sometimes we spend time with our friends and neighbors but we forget to spend time with our families and we realize this too late. We take advantage of all the things in our lives. Those who are married and have children, who have brothers and sisters living close by, should give them their affection, time, and love.
And all I have to say to my brother firefighters, police, and civilians, including the President, Mr. Giuliani (the Mayor of NY), and the Governor is that I wish, with all my heart, that God blesses you and gives you the strength to move forward and that this pain is reparable. I know, in my heart, that behind all of this, God is demonstrating his love and strength and that you, our North American friends, sisters and brothers, most of all those in New York, will move forward and that this country will grow five times stronger than it is now.
My wish and my heartfelt thoughts are that God blesses you. I, Efrain Huaman Carrion, Peruvian firefighter, wish this for you.

Instantes en que presento a nuestro Visitante de Honor Cap. ARTI – USA EFRAÌN HUAMÀN CARRIÒN para dar inicio al Conversatorio : Experiencia de Bombero Peruano en Rescate de Torres Gemelas – Nueva York , Estados Unidos. Realmente nos ha dejado meditando sobre como pensamos o el nivel de conocimiento que tenemos de còmo actuar frente a un desastre. Pudimos darnos cuenta que tenemos muchos conceptos equivocados , por ello es necesario y urgente dirìa yo, que nos organizemos CBP y Universidad para la organizaciòn de cursos , porque hasta ahora los simulacros solo son ubicarse en cìrculos pintados en determinadas àreas .
Fue gratìsima la presencia de nuestro Ejército Peruano , en donde tambièn el Cap. Huamàn fue miembro durante el combate del Cenepa .
Doña Marina Carriòn Delgado , tambièn fue nuestra homenajeada , porque habiendo quedado huèrfano a los siete años , ella supo sembrar valores y orientarlo siempre hacia la superaciòn. Precisos instantes en que el Presidente de la Comisiòn de Orden y Gestiòn Dr. Milthon Honorio Muñoz Berrocal condecora con la Medalla Simbolo de nuestra universidad a nuestro compatriota Cap. ARTI – USA EFRAÌN HUAMÀN CARRIÒN , declaràndolo Visitante de Honor por sus Valores solidarios y humanitarios en el rescate de las vìctimas en el antentado a las Torres Gemelas – Nueva York , 11 septiembre 2001 y por su trayectoria profesional como bombero , en donde èl dice : Mi misiòn es salvar vidas.
La ceremonia estuvo muy concurrida por estudiantes , profesores, personal administrativo de nuestra universidad, tambièn estuvieron presentes miembros de las Compañìas de Bomberos de Lambayeque Nª 88, CBP Salvadora Chiclayo Nª 27 y la presencia del Vicepresidente Regional de Chiclayo.
Su madre , Profesora Marina Carriòn Delgado con sus 92 años y una fortaleza admirable disfrutò este reconocimiento a su hijo , Cap. Efraìn Huamàn Carriòn , quien con su sencillez encandilò al pùblico que asistiò a este acto y asì escuchar su experiencia no solo en el rescate a las vìctimas en las Torres Gemelas en Estados Unidos en donde ha tenido destacada participaciòn , sino tambièn su amplia experiencia que ha recogido en desastres ocurridos en paìses como Italia , Francia, Iràn , Afganistàn, Irak, Colombia , Perù, Chile .

No tiene medios para transportar a Cuerpo de Bomberos más necesitados
PERUANO CONSIGUE EQUIPOS EN DONACION POR VALOR DE 300 MIL DOLARES

NUEVA YORK, Un valeroso bombero peruano que participó en las operaciones de rescate en la zona cero, en los escombros del World Trade Center, gestionó y consiguió equipos en donación por un valor aproximado de 300 mil dólares pero el problema que aún no ha resuelto es conseguir los medios para transportarlo y entregarlo a los cuerpos de bomberos voluntarios más necesitados dentro del territorio peruano.
“Son equipos costosos lo mismo que uniformes de rescate y el mayor problema es que no encuentro los medios económicos para transportarlo al Perú”, afirmó Efraín Huamán Carrión, de 36 años de edad, voluntario del Cuerpo de bomberos en el distrito de Pueblo Libre, quien logró viajar a Nueva York por sus propios recursos para unirse a las brigadas de rescate. Los equipos donados en perfectas condiciones, proceden de the American Rescue Team International (ARTI) en los Estados Unidos, con sede Sandia Park, en Nueva México.
Huamán Carrión, ayudó a sacar los cadáveres de los escombros en las Torres Gemelas y su labor le sirvió para ser felicitado por el alcalde de Nueva York Rudolph Giuliani y el jefe de bomberos Thomas Von Hesse. Aún dolido por la tragedia provocada por los ataques terroristas, el bombero Huamán, expresó su agradecimiento por el valioso donativo a The American Rescue Team en Estados Unidos, en la persona de Douglas F. Copp, Jefe de Rescates y Desastres, al mismo tiempo que solicitó a las Autoridades Peruanas que le faciliten el transporte de los equipos donados que redundará en beneficio de la seguridad de la población peruana.
“Queremos dar nuestra contribución a los hermanos peruanos y sus cuerpos de bomberos en los pueblos más alejados y me satisface el trabajo que hizo el bombero Efrain Huamán en Nueva York”, sostuvo Douglas Copp, quien trabajó arduamente en las operaciones de rescate y es uno de los artifices de la nueva técnica”Triángulo de la Vida” que puede salvar vidas en casos de desastres.
“El Bombero Huaman Carrión es un ejemplo para nuestra comunidad y estamos agradecidos a Douglas Copp,ejecutivo de ARTI por su desinteresada ayuda al pueblo peruano al donar un costoso equipo de rescate”, dijo David Camacho, experto en artes gráficas en Nueva Jersey, al reunirse y prestar ayuda a los rescatistas.
La Cancilleria Peruana, no respondió de inmediato al llamado del bombero Huamán Carrión, quien dirige las operaciones de rescate del equipo ARTI en el Perú. Parte del equipo donado se encuentra en Alburquerque y en Nuevo México, a donde viajó el bombero peruano posterior a su tarea de rescate en Nueva York.
Nacido en la ciudad de Chiclayo, el bombero Huaman Carrión, tiene experiencia en proveer ayuda humanitaria a la ciudadanía. Hace poco pudo repartir medicinas en Arequipa, donadas por instituciones filantrópicas. La Primera Dama de la Nación, Eliane Karp de Toledo, le pidió a Huamán Carrión adiestrar a jovencitos y miembros de la comunidad en labores de rescate. “Mi labor es del todo voluntaria y creo que todos tenemos que prepararnos ante cualquier desastre natural y es bueno que conozcan las técnicas del triángulo de la vida que ha salvado muchas vidas al desplomarse sus viviendas”, precisó el bombero.
